There are plenty of historic places in Virginia and many have scary stories to tell and share. Here is a list of 10 most haunted and spookiest locations in Virginia - which you should consider visiting while you are here.

Swannanoa Palace, Afton

Beautiful and grand Swannanoa Palace is allegedly haunted by Sallie Dooley and James H. Dooley, who built the palace in 1912. Other spirits of groundskeepers and servants have been heard in the form of whispers. Visitors reported hearing sounds and footprints throughout the library.

St. Albans Sanatorium, Fairlawn

Where pain and torture are experienced on a daily basis, ghosts are sure to stay. Hostages, soldiers, bullied boys, and the mentally ill; St. Albans Sanatorium offers ghosts abundantly. While sanatorium was Lutheran boys’ school, many of the boys committed suicide as a result of the bullying and mistreatment. While it was a psychiatric infirmary in 1916, patients were treated like lab rats, exposed to torturous tests that resulted in their death.

The Winery at LaGrange, Haymarket

Located in Haymarket, The Winery at LaGrange is known for its mischievous spirits and reportedly haunted by Benoni Harrison - the past owner; his niece; and unidentified shadow figures. Despite the fact that the place is haunted, the ghosts do not hurt the guests.

Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, Alexandria

In 1816, a young woman travelled to Alexandria with her husband and booked room 8 at Gadsby’s Tavern. Unfortunately due to her sickness; she died a few days later. She requested everyone not to reveal her identity. Her wish was honored and she was buried as ‘Female Stranger’. Even today, cries can be heard from room number 8 as she never left the hotel.

Bacon’s Castle, Surry

Bacon’s Castle, also known as The Arthur Allen House, which has housed people for over 300 years, is certainly one of the most haunted places in Virginia. Sounds, cries, laughter, and footsteps have all been reported. Visitors have seen floating heads and objects moving on their own.

Martha Washington Inn & Spa, Abingdon

The Martha Washington Inn was built by Francis Preston in 1832. During the civil war, many soldiers died in the hotel, and it is believed that some of their souls never left. “Yankee Sweetheart” is the most known ghost, looking for her deceased lover. Visitors reported disembodied voices and wails, phantom horses, and bloodstains appearing on carpets.

Ferry Plantation House, Virginia Beach

Built in the 1600s, Ferry Plantation House is said to be haunted by at least 11 spirits including Grace Sherwood – convicted for witchcraft; Sally Rebecca Walke – waiting for fiancée who died in war; Henry – the slave; lady in the white; two children seen on 2nd floor; little boy Eric who fell from window and died; Former owners’ 5-year-old daughter - who died in 1860 and people who lost lives in shipwreck.

Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond

Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond is allegedly haunted by Richmond Vampire; railroad fireman who died in an accident and a young girl playing with a dog - who died of Scarlet Fever. Visitors have also reported hearing moans and cries at Pyramids, which was built in memory of the thousands of troops.

Captain Timothy Hill House, Chincoteague Island

Captain Timothy Hill House, built in the 1800s, is allegedly haunted by Captain Timothy Hill and his daughter, Jennie. The tragic story goes like this; Jennie wanted to marry her childhood friend, Tom Freeman. But the Captain was against it. Somehow, Timothy Hill ends up shooting Jennie and his wife in a field. His wife survived but Jennie died. Tom ended up taking his own life. It is claimed that Jennie is still in the house, searching for Tom.

Wise County Orphanage, Wise

The Wise County Orphanage, located at 9619 Turkey Branch Road, served as a home for orphaned and abandoned children in the state. Visitors reported seeing ghostly figures standing in front of the windows, bouncing balls and floating lights.
