Ramoji Film City, located in Hyderabad, India, is an integrated film studio facility that has earned the distinction of being the largest film studio complex in the world, spread over a vast expanse of 1,666 acres (674 hectares). Certified by Guinness World Records, the film city was established in 1996 by media mogul and Telugu film producer Ramoji Rao. The Guardian has aptly described it as a "city within a city."
Not only is it a world-renowned film studio, but it also serves as a thematic holiday destination and a popular tourist and recreational center. The film city boasts a multitude of natural and artificial attractions, including an amusement park. With over 1.5 million visitors per year, Ramoji Film City is one of the most visited tourist destinations in India.
The idea behind Ramoji Film City was to create a studio similar to those in Hollywood. It was built on the outskirts of Hyderabad in Abdullahpurmet in 1996, and Maa Naannaku Pelli (1997) became the first film to be shot on its premises. The studio has an array of impressive sets, including forests, gardens, hotels, an airport, apartment blocks, mansions, and workshops, among others.
Tourists can visit the film sets, theme parks, and amusement rides, and explore the sets used in blockbuster films such as Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017). Visitors can also marvel at all the statues and props used in these films. In addition to this, Ramoji Film City boasts special sets dedicated to North India and South India. The film city also has an airport, hospital, and railway station, and the railway station set used in the movie Chennai Express can be found here.
