1) Villisca Ax Murder House, Villisca
Josiah B. and Sara Moore House was the site of the 1912 brutal murder of eight people, including six children. The murder mystery remains unsolved. The house was renovated in the 1990s and serves as the Villisca Axe Murder House. Visitors have reported strange encounters including vanishing blood stains, feelings of evil presences, unknown green lights, chills, unseen touches, and ghostly voices.
2) Coe College, Cedar Rapids
Coe College is said to be haunted by the ghost of a girl named Helen Roberts, who died in 1918 due to Spanish Flu epidemic. Her spirit resides inside of an old grandfather clock in the building where she once lived. During the night, the spirit is said to appear beside student's beds, slam doors and pull the covers off the beds.
3) Mason House Inn, Bentonsport
1846 historic hotel, Mason House Inn, is said to be haunted by several spirits. In Room 5, ghost of a young boy pulls people’s clothes while they sleep. A man named Knapp was murdered in Room 7, and it’s believed that his spirit still haunts the room. Visitors have seen a floating, disembodied head in Room 8. Franklin Hotel is said to be haunted by two ghosts. The ghost of woman named Lily who wears a lavender gown and can be heard singing or moaning. The other is a former merchant known as Leo, who operated the hotel's laundry for 30 years and can be heard ringing the hotel's old bell message system.
5) Independence State Hospital, Independence
Built in 1873, the Independence State Hospital was used to cure alcoholics, drug addicts, mentally ill and the criminally insane. It is believed that ghosts of former staff and patients are seen in the buildings and on the grounds. People have reported being touched and pushed by unseen forces along with voices, whispers and laughter. Paranormal incidents like door opening and closing on their own, phantom footsteps and turning on and off the lights automatically have been reported.
