How to grow Broccoli from seeds at home?

Broccoli is rich in nutrients, and worth growing in your gardens. It is a great source of Vitamin A, folic acid, potassium, fiber, and iron. In this video, we will discuss on, how to grow broccoli at home, from sowing seeds, growing to harvest.

Best Time To Grow Broccoli

Broccoli is a cool-season vegetable. Therefore, it should be planted in cooler months of the year, when the temperature ranges, from 15 to 30 degree Celsius. Broccoli needs a sunny spot, with partial shade to grow. A site, that receives 5 to 7 hours of sunlight, is a perfect spot to pick.

Sowing Seeds of Broccoli

Soaking broccoli seeds, in warm water for 12 to 24 hours, will give them a good head start, and can even speed up germination.

Prepare a Seedling Mix

Prepare a seedling mix, the potting mix, in which you will be sowing the broccoli seeds. Plant your broccoli seeds in soil that is fertile, moist, and drains well.

For seedling mix, use the following composition. Coco Peat should be 50%, Sand 30% and Vermicompost 20%. Mix them well before use. If you want to plant seeds directly, the composition should contain, Garden soil 40%, Sand 20%, and Vermicompost 40%.

Planting Broccoli Seeds in Seedling Tray

By using seedling trays, growers can produce healthier, more uniform and vigorous seedlings, and allow for field planting, without disturbing the root system. The use of seed trays, for seedling production, is a common practice in modern agriculture.

Fill your seedling tray, with a high quality seed starting mix, we prepared. You can plant 2 to 3 seeds per hole.  You can either make a shallow hole in the soil, or drop the seed into it. Or place the seed on top, and then gently press it into the soil.

Lightly cover the seeds, and gently press the soil down, to ensure it comes into contact with the seeds. Since they are so small, broccoli seeds should only be planted about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep.

If you are planting seeds directly in land or large container, plant your seeds 12 to 20 inches apart from each other.  It is necessary to keep distance between two broccoli plants as they can grow up to 3 feet in height. Water it gently, to make the soil moist.  You can also water your trays, from the bottom, so you don’t disturb the soil, or displace the seeds. Broccoli seeds take 4 to 7 days to germinate.

Transplanting the Saplings from Tray

The saplings will grow big enough, for example, 3 to 4 leaves, in 18 to 24 days. Transplant them to a big container or direct in land.  We will use the potting mix which should be a nutrient rich well draining soil. Carefully take out the sapling, without hurting its root system. And place it inside the large container or direct in land. Repeat the same process for each sapling. Then, water it gently, to make the soil moist, and keep it in bright, indirect sunlight, for 3 to 4 days. Regularly fertilizing them will speed things up.

Harvesting Broccoli

Broccoli will be ready to get harvested, in 80 to 100 days. To harvest, simply use a knife, to cut the stalk away, from the plant. Broccoli should be tight and firm.  Remove a few leaves, too, for your salad at lunchtime, but don’t pull up the plant yet! If you let the plant keep growing, it’ll give you a second crop of smaller side-shoots.
