Planting Ridge Gourd Seeds in Pot

Ridge gourd can be grown in almost all types of soils. However they need a lot of nutrients and also a lot of water. So you need a bigger container to grow ridge gourd in pots. Just make sure that it is at least
12 inches deep. Use a nutrient rich potting mix which has good water retention property.

The first step is filling the tray or containers with soil. After the soil is ready, seeds are to be spread on the soil surface.

You can grow 3-4 plants in a pot but the distance between plants needs to be approximately 4-5 inch. Wet the soil with water to provide the right environment for seeds to germinate.

Now cover the seeds with a very thin layer of soil and gently pat the surface in order to make the seeds settle well in the container.

Spray enough water over the surface in order to make the surface completely moist but do not flood it with water.

Soaking the seeds before sowing will soften the seed coat you can soak the seeds overnight in tepid water to help speed up germination.

Planting Ridge Gourd in Seedling Tray

You can also plant in seedling tray. By using seedling trays you can produce healthier more uniform and vigorous seedlings and allow for field planting without disturbing the root system. Once the plant has
reached at least 1/2 foot in height, it is time to transplant them to a pot or open space. Start pricking out as soon as the seedlings are big enough to handle.

Germination

Your ridge gourd seeds will germinate within the first 6 – 8 days. You will notice tiny sprouts growing at this stage. Seedlings will start growing into a small plant from the second week onwards. Ridge
gourds require full sunlight to grow and daily watering in summer.

Vertical Trellis Support

Ridge gourds are aggressive climbers and need a lot of space to grow. So by using locally available material like pipes, bamboo, ropes, wires, etc. develop strong vertical trellis support up to a height of 5-6
ft, for your ridge gourd plant.

Pollination and Flowering

Your plants will flower 80-90 days from sowing, it has separate Male & female flowers on the same plant. Fruits will be formed on female flower after pollination.

Harvesting

Ridge Gourd can be harvested 3 months after sowing the seeds. Harvesting season can continue for the next 3 months. Ridge gourd fruits grow very fast even when you grow ridge gourd in pots. After
pollination they are ready to pick in approximately 8-12 days. You can pick your gourd about 2-3 days after the fruit has stopped growing.
