Bhindi is a nutritious food with many health benefits. Lady Finger is rich in magnesium folate fiber antioxidants and vitamin C K1 and A. It may benefit pregnant women heart health and blood sugar control. It may even have anticancer properties.

 

Preparing Seeds for Planting Lady Finger / Okra / Bhindi

If you want to use fresh seeds for planting than wait! Keep the chosen okra on the plant until it is dry and brittle. Once the pods are dried out split the okra to open it up and remove the seeds.

Soaking the seeds before sowing will soften the seed coat. You can soak the seeds overnight in tepid water to help speed up?germination.

 

Planting Lady Finger / Okra / Bhindi from Seeds In Pot

The first step is filling the tray or containers with soil.  

Okra is adaptable and will grow in most soils though it performs best in well-drained soil that’s rich in organic?matter. Use good potting mix rather ordinary soil.


After the soil is ready seeds are to be spread on the soil surface.  
Place the seeds around 1.5 to 2 inch depth. It is better to use a seedling tray for the same.

You could cover the seedling tray or pot with a plastic cover for faster germination. Make few small holes in the cover for air flow.

Now cover the seeds with a very thin layer of soil  and gently pat the surface in order to make the seeds settle well in the container.

Spray enough water over the surface in order to make the surface completely moist  but do not flood it with water.

Keep the seeds to germinate in a warm place. In harsh weather conditions you could place them indoor. Choose a warm and well-lighted corner.

Okra require evenly moist soil to ensure the best and fast growth. Do not over water or allow the soil to dry out.

Planting Lady Finger / Okra / Bhindi In Seedling Tray

You can also plant Lady Finger in seedling tray. By using seedling trays you can produce healthier more uniform and vigorous seedlings and allow for field planting without disturbing the root system.

In Sprouting Stage. Seeds will germinate within first 4-6 days or so and tiny sprouts will be visible.


First leaves will emerge within 8 to 10 days.


Second week onwards seedlings will start growing into a small plant.

'Pricking out' means separating out seedlings growing together and transferring them into their own plugs or pots of potting mix.

Start pricking out as soon as the seedlings are big enough to handle.

Fill pots with good quality all-purpose potting mix. Try to retain as much of the original potting mix around the roots as you can.

Okra plants are tall so ff you are planting okra transplants be sure to space them 1 to 2 feet apart to give them ample room to?grow.
Plant okra seeds about ½?to 1?inch deep and 12 to 18 inches apart in a row.

Choose a pot which is at least 10 inches in depth and 10 inches in width. If you are planting in a big container have one plant for square feet. You can also use "grow bags".

Harvesting Okra or?‘Lady Finger’ or? ‘Bhindi’


Okra plant will start flowering at the beginning of the 2nd month; raw

Okra pods can be harvested within 40-50 days from the sowing of seeds & harvesting season can continue for next 3 months.

Harvest the okra when it’s about 2 to 3 inches long. Cut the stem just above the cap with a knife.


Wear gloves and long sleeves when cutting the okra because its tiny spines that will irritate your skin.


Do not discard the plant until it gives around 15 to 20 Okras.


The okra plant keeps growing high if you give good support.


Let it lean on the compound wall or balcony railing for support.
